In the ’50s I was horse-mad and mostly rode on the beach at Woolacombe. In 1953 I got up early to help catch and groom the horses, plait their manes, polish their hooves and weave red, white and blue decorations for their bridles. We were going to ride in the procession in Ilfracombe to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. I felt I had to include this, so soon after the King’s coronation!
