In the ’40s I was living in this beautiful isolated cottage in the woods in North Devon. I remember long walks with my father and the two dogs. He had a big knobbly walking stick, which had belonged to his father, for beating down the brambles; and the trick was to see how far we could go through woods and fields without ever walking along a road.
