The original Bell Inn dates from 1603 and, as The Old Bell, became the High Street's largest inn with stabling for 54 horses and with its own blacksmith. It was extended into the street in 1725 with classic, early Georgian features. Some of the upper-storey sash windows were bricked-in to avoid paying window tax in the 1790s.
