After Henry VIII became Supreme Head of the Church of England in 1534, many Anglican churches displayed the Royal Arms to symbolise the monarch's authority. They were usually hung above the chancel arch, but many years after the Reformation they were found in less prominent positions. This one was created for St Mary's in 1767, seven years after George III became King of Great Britain and Ireland.
