The Charter Tower stands at the corner of the Charter Gardens. Henry VIII granted the town its first Royal Charter in 1539, giving it the status of a bailiwick, with a weekly market and annual fair. A further Charter was granted by Elizabeth I in 1572. The Charter Tower is a remnant of the first Bury, built by Richard Combe in the late 16th century.
