Near St Mary's Close is a large civic building at 48-52 High Street (left). It was designed by George Low to complement the Old Town Hall and was completed in 1888. No. 48 was once the public library, but in 2022 was home to Community Action Dacorum, a charity that supports voluntary organisations and community groups.
