The Olde King's Arms began as an early 16th century alehouse. By the time of the English Civil War it had stabling for 36 horses. A side alley led to New Plait Market Yard which from 1832 thrived until the market for straw plait for hat-making declined. It also had a rare open balcony for entertainment purposes.
