Spring is the time of year when Society members love to go walking, but 2020 is different. To remind us of what we are missing here's a selection of photographs taken by John Hockey and Chris Howe when walking the North Chiltern Trail.

Welcome to the Chilterns. The area is blessed with gentle rolling hills, beechwoods and picturesque villages. There is an extensive network of paths, which are generally well maintained. The walks, which follow this introduction, give some idea of what is available; with the aid of maps you can either follow the suggested route or vary it to suit your needs.

If what you see on this site appeals to you the first step is to obtain a paper map.The best choices are Ordnance Survey Explorer series (orange covers) and the Chiltern Society footpath maps. The Society’s concentrate on the needs of walkers and show paths more prominently than roads. They also show permissive paths, pubs and Anglican churches by name. Car parks are also shown. Chiltern Society maps are available from the Society office, phone number 01494 771250 and from various shops including Fox’s of Amersham and Chapter One Booksellers of Chesham. Ordnance Survey maps are generally available at bookshops.

This is a lovely circular walk of about 1.5 km through woodland and over open grassland at the edge of the Chiltern Hills. The ecology of the area is celebrated in a series of innovative organic sculptures set out along the trail route. The installations are by professional artists working with children from a number of schools and voluntary organisations in the area. Each installation has a simple built-in listening post, this not only explains the concept of the sculptures but includes stories, poems, songs and suggestions to further the enjoyment of a visit.

The Talking Trail opened in 2012 and is a production by Outdoor Culture in partnership with Natural England, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve is free to everyone and is signposted from the A40 near Stokenchurch, just off junction 5 of the M40.

Chris Howe and John Hockey from the Chiltern Society's PhotoGroup have photographed the really delightful and relatively unpublicised Chiltern countryside between Luton and Hitchin. The North Chiltern Trail is divided into nine sections as shown below. Click on any thumbnail to see photos of the attractive landscapes and other interesting features in each section.

The Ridgeway, Britain’s oldest road, is a National Trail from Wessex to Ivinghoe Beacon. Chris Smith walked the path in the Chilterns in 2012 – 2014 and illustrates the first section of this album. The second section includes photographs by David Iles who walked the Chilterns section from Ivinghoe to Goring in 1982.
