Hares are not uncommon in summer, often seen racing across the fairways or as here stock still by a tree

So many aspects of nature gladden my heart, but right at the top of the list are skylarks and hares. I feel that John Hockey’s photograph, taken at Whipsnade Park Golf Club, captures some of the qualities that make the hare such a wonderful creature – it’s powerful and alert, ready to spring into action and race away if the need arises. Sadly, although I see and hear skylarks every year, it’s some time since I’ve seen a hare bounding across a field, and my life feels the poorer for it.
