The legend on this door in the High Street reads: “Sorry….Out of Fuel….ever since 8 gallons cost over £1. Pump attendant ‘went to lunch’. Mechanic got ‘too old to repair’. Neither left a mobile number. Green Shield Stamps no longer given.” The survival of these rare road-side fuel pumps is a tribute to Roald Dahl, Great Missenden's most famous resident. They are said to have inspired the garage in his 1975 story 'Danny, the Champion of the World'.
