I’ve had the good fortune to go gliding three times – on each occasion from London Gliding Club in Dunstable. The first time was a birthday present, but the other two flights came about because I was writing an article about the club for Chiltern magazine. I sometimes wish I’d taken up gliding as a hobby – I find it an exhilarating experience, and so much more peaceful than flying in a light aircraft. Being allowed to take the controls was a thrill, and because we were always at a relatively low altitude it was possible to identify many familiar features on the ground. I would definitely go up again if I had the opportunity.
