At the age of 22, a year after arriving in Bracknell, I joined what is now the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), aiming to get out and do something useful with my weekends. At the time, the worksite might be anywhere in southern England, usually for a whole weekend or even longer, learning new practical skills and generally giving nature a helping hand. One of the first sites I worked at was here, at Crowell Common, and my main visual recollection is the sight of the old Chinnor cement works (now closed and demolished) below the escarpment. I rediscovered Crowell Common many years later during my contribution to the Chilterns Commons project. April 2016
