When I was a student I went out with a girl called Ruth who lived in the cottage at the left hand end of this row in Croxley Green. It was in a great location, right on the village green and close to the Coach and Horses pub – the favoured hostelry for local student types. We were ‘an item’ for over a year, but I was at university in London and she was studying medicine in Southampton, so eventually we went our separate ways. By a huge coincidence, in the 1990s I met a former colleague of hers on holiday in Morocco, who told me she had become an anaesthetist and moved to Australia. Then, nearly four decades after we split up, she got in touch with me via the internet. We met at her sister’s house one Christmas when she was visiting the UK, and again a few years later when Mavis and I were in Melbourne. Catching up after all that time was a little strange, but good fun!
