This is where my formal education began in Croxley Green – Yorke Road Infant School, as it was then. My teacher had the unfortunate name of ‘Miss Weary’, but I don’t think it did her justice. I still have an image in my head of the classroom on my first day - but whether or not it’s accurate I have no idea. The school was only about 100 yards down the road from where I lived, and my primary school – Harvey Road – was even closer: just over our back fence, in fact. This came in useful once or twice when I was late. A few years ago I took my granddaughters to Yorke Road, and was upset to see the state of the building (no longer a school by then). Thankfully it now appears (from the outside at least) to have undergone a sensitive conversion, and still closely resembles the building I remember.
