In about 1920 the ironmonger is keeping up the tradition of that trade by displaying part of his stock outside the front door. The fishmonger's shop, with the donkey cart outside, was run for over twenty-five years by the Rance family. The large tree was known as Milton's Elm. By 1932 it had been reduced to a mere stump, the gnarled roots of which still provided informal seating for the old folk of the village as they had done for generations. Even the stump was under threat by 1934 and despite vociferous protest and the 800-name petition, it was removed in 1940 as a hazard to passing traffic.
