The Bridgewater Monument, Ashridge can be seen from miles around. It celebrates the achievements of Francis Egerton, ‘The Canal Duke’. I love the fact that the green urn at the top was made from copper reputedly brought from South America, the column is Aberdeen granite and the base York stone. No local materials were used, yet sometimes that is what is needed to make a lasting statement.
