Lady Capel’s lock. Lady Capel was the wife of one of the Earls of Essex who owned the Cassiobury Estate in Watford. Lady Capel's Wharf was built here because it was the closest point to London where coal could be unloaded from a canal boat without incurring a toll. The River Gade flows into and out of the canal here.
