This is a beautiful image of the River Chess that has been part of my life virtually since birth, the scene of many escapades. I grew up at one end of it and now live at the other. Many of my walks include different sections of it. When I was little I jumped into it when my parents weren’t watching, thinking I could teach myself to swim. I discovered I was wrong and had to be dragged out, crying and spluttering. Later I had a good friend who lived in a rambling old coach house in Troutstream Way with his eccentric mother and sister. We played in a band together, and appeared on TV in a children’s talent show. He went on to make a lot of money in the music business – I didn’t. Much more recently, as a proud grandad, I watched my twin granddaughters paddle in the river by Water Lane in Chesham, just after their final day at Thomas Harding School. These days I know so much more about the importance and fragility of chalk streams, and I fervently hope we never lose them.
