Marian pillars over the vestry door on the north side of the high altar date from the reign of Queen Mary (1553 - 1558) whose mother, Catherine of Aragon, was the first wife of Henry VIII. The annulment of this marriage took place in the Lady Chapel of Dunstable Priory. Because of this connection it is thought that this screen may have been given to the church by Queen Mary when she was trying to restore Roman Catholic worship in churches throughout the country. The carvings show various items associated with the crucifixion of Christ, and royal badges of England and Spain.
