The parish church of St Paul with St Mary in Wooburn has undergone many additions and alterations. For example the nave dates from about 1180, but was considerably restored in 1856 when a clerestory was added. A North chapel and a West tower were added in 1442. In 1868-69 William Butterfield, the London-born Gothic Revival architect (1814-1900) transformed the external appearance by adding knapped flint and stone dressings to the existing structure. He also added offset buttresses and a tiled roof.
