The Chequers in Church Lane is probably the site of the oldest public house in the village; it was run by William Truelove in 1577 as an alehouse. This Chequers dates from the 17th century and was rebuilt in the 18th & 19th centuries; its name was changed from ‘The Ninepin & Bowl’ in 1768 to ‘The Chequers’.
