The Royal Saracen's Head had a makeover in 2007, exchanging the 'brewer's Tudor' black and white for more fashionable grey and cream. Makeovers are nothing new here since the exterior is largely the work of local architect, Arthur Vernon, who remodelled this 16th century inn around 1893. This was the principal coaching inn where horses were changed. Before the latest facelift the gable used to proclaim proudly 'Patronized by Royalty', though we hesitate to conjecture which royal persons have actually laid down their heads here.
