Panel on the front of Hitchin Library represents the town's early history. It depicts King Offa, the River Hiz and the Hicce tribe, who were centred on Hitchin and mentioned in the 'Tribal Hidage', an Anglo-Saxon document compiled between the 7th and 9th centuries.
