The Norman crypt in the tiny North Yorkshire village of Lastingham is one of England’s very special places, and we never fail to visit if we are in the area. Simon Jenkins comments in his ‘England’s 1000 Best churches’ that some churches are a challenge to the faithful: Lastingham is a challenge to the faithless. I agree.

    Ooh… receding arches. Patterns like this in architecture provide a draw for the eye and take you into the shot. The stairs in the background provide a mystery viewpoint too as you cannot see where they take you. That sort of mystery is a great invitation into the image. Once the viewers eye is captured like that you captured their interest. Strong composition.
