The Rye and Holywell Mead information board at the western end of the park recalls the area's historical importance. Earthenware dating from over 3,000 years ago was found here. In 1722 the remains of a Roman villa dating from 150-170 AD was uncovered in the Holywell Mead section to the east. The area known as Rye Mead once offered townspeople the right to pasture their cattle, while the Carrington family owned a section that formed part of its Wycombe Abbey estate.
