For many the Chilterns is the location for a wide variety of outdoor leisure activities. Dunstable Downs is synonymous with gliding and is the home of the London Gliding Club that moved here in 1930. Originally they flew from Ivinghoe Beacon before being evicted for “spoiling its peaceful enjoyment by the public”. The club (and the crowds) then moved to their current home at the foot of the Downs.

I did join the London Gliding Club briefly but found that waiting around for recovery after landing didn’t suit my temperament. Some years ago a Chilterns Conservation Board meeting was held at the club and after the formal business was completed we were treated to a presentation on the history of the club. We learned that in the early years gliders were catapulted by bungee off the top of the escarpment. Sounds scary!
