In 2003 I took early retirement and during that brief honeymoon period when my life was my own and there is still some spare time to make use of, I offered to contribute to Gay Beattie's (née Fallows) book, "Wild Flowers and where to find them in the Chilterns", funded by the Chiltern Society. The task was simple: to walk many of the 18 guided walks, listing all the flowers seen en route and building a catalogue of photographs, with four of the walks being covered several times over the course of the year, especially in spring and summer. One of 'my' walks took me through BBOWT's Homefield Wood nature reserve, home to various orchids including the fly orchid and the rare military orchid, photos of which can be found in the book. Earlier in the year, the reserve is often dominated by the humble, but no less beautiful, primrose. March 2011.
