The South Chilterns Volunteers (SCV), as they were known, were nomadic for a while and by joining them it gave me the chance to discover even more gems within the Chilterns. This picture is of a large open water tank south of the A4130 at Bix. It was built in Victorian times to provide water, at first for horses and later for steam engines, at the top of the long climb from Henley. Eventually it fell into disuse, dried out, silted up and lay forgotten until accidentally stumbled across by a local resident who found it hidden beneath the undergrowth. It was then restored and turned into a pond for wildlife with the help of the Chiltern Society. It is now maintained by people living in the nearby village. November 2011
