Formerly known as the Clayton Arms, the Grouse & Ale pub and restaurant is Lane End's oldest building. It was was built in 1679 as a manor house by Sir Robert Clayton who was Lord Mayor of London after the fire in 1666. By the later 19th century the Clayton Arms was owned by the Goodchild family. A sawmill and grinding business was located in the inn's backyard.
