Ascott House, Wing is a National Trust gem. It is homely yet inspiring and, as is often the case with Rothschild houses, is superbly situated with views of the Chilterns. The family bravely embrace the new as well as respecting the old. My picture shows a new slate sculpture by Richard Long, set in the lawn with Ascott House beyond. Somehow, with the topiary in between, it just works in a quirky way that appeals to me.
