The Dower House, sited on the High Street, was built in the early 19th century. It was part of the Pilkington manor estate that originally occupied a large area in this part of the town from the 17th century until the latter half of the 19th century when it was broken up and sold for residential development. A dower house was intended for the use of the widow of a deceased landlord. (2000)
