Telecom tower. For many people Stokenchurch is synonymous with the tower that can be seen more than 20 miles away when travelling south on the M40. In the 1950s plans were developed for a national network of microwave radio stations to be built and used in the event of a nuclear attack which had destroyed the, then, more traditional means of communication.

The sites needed to be on high ground and one of these was to be at Stokenchurch. As the threat of cold war receded, priorities changed but the construction of the tower went ahead in the 1960s and it is now used for a range of telecommunication purposes.
