Stoke Poges manor house was completed in 1555 and it is said that Queen Elizabeth I was sumptuously entertained here. A later monarch, Charles I, was imprisoned at the house in 1647 before his execution. In 1750 Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown laid out the grounds and in 1789 all but the west wing of the manor was demolished and rebuilt. In recent times the manor house was reported to have been put up for sale for £13.5 million and was acquired by a private buyer.
