Sir William Borlase's Grammar School in West Street was founded in 1624 as a free school to provide a basic education for 24 poor boys and 24 poor girls. The original building was much enlarged in the 19th and 20th centuries; it is a fine example of a gabled brick and flint structure. In 2005 it was still a mixed grammar school.
