The toll road to Ashridge. In 1604 Elizabeth I's Lord Keeper, Sir Thomas Egerton, acquired both Ashridge and Little Gaddesden from Sir Robert Dormer. These Manors passed to the successive Earls and Dukes of Bridgewater, and then through the female line to the Lords Brownlow until the break up and sale of the Ashridge estate from 1921.
