Twenty years ago preparing a field for growing arable crops involved ploughing, followed by drilling and rolling. Today this is carried out in one operation by a disc seed drill. The discs cut shallow drills into the stubble that has remained after the harvested crops. The machine sows the seed and compacts the soil in a single pass, reducing the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere.
