As this chart in the parish church testifies, Tring has a close connection with the forebears of George Washington. In 1631 the Reverend Lawrence Washington and his wife Amphyllis had a son named John. In 1656 he left Tring to embark on a trading voyage to Virginia, where he remained and became married. His great grandson was George Washington (1732-1799), the first president of the USA.
