The original Silk Mill in Brook Street dates from 1824 and operated up to 1898. At one time it had around 500 employees. Over half of them were young children who also worked the long hours that were usual in agriculture and local industries like papermaking and brickmaking. The Silk Mill Business Park was first developed in the 1990s and later refurbished. In 2022 it accommodated around 50 small businesses.
