We are near North Hill, the road from Chorleywood that is narrow and steep; it is much loved by artists but not by cyclists. Across the Chess valley is Goldingtons, a former manor house. In the valley is Sarratt Mill but none of its workings remain; for some 100 years it milled corn and then paper. The field below Goldingtons faces south and is terraced. The terraces suggest it may once have been a Roman vineyard or they may have been medieval strip lynchets used for farming.
