Near Great Hampden is this monument to John Hampden, an MP in the reigns of James I and Charles I. Hampden was a Puritan country gentleman who refused to pay taxes demanded by Charles. He came to national prominence as a defender of liberty and died in June 1643 from wounds he received at Chalgrove during the First Civil War.
