The Priory Church of St Peter was a former Augustine Priory founded under the patronage of Henry 1 in 1132. It was here that the Court of 1533 annulled the marriage of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. The church finally closed in 1540 and many of the Priory buildings were pulled down. However, the part used by the local parishioners was saved and is still in use.
