The original Eleanor's cross was erected by Edward I when his wife, Queen Eleanor of Castile, died in 1290. This was one of twelve crosses that recorded the stopping places when she was returned to London from Lincoln. The new Eleanor Cross sculpture by D Barrett was completed on 23 October 1985.
