Description Berkhamsted station. Originally known as the London and Birmingham Railway, the line through Berkhamsted was constructed in 1837 and was the first UK inter-city railway. The present station was built in 1887. On the north side is what was once the private waiting room of Lord Brownlow, a local landowner. (2000)

Description The canal was opened through Berkhamsted in 1798 as the Grand Junction Canal, later to become the Grand Union Canal. It was built to connect London to the manufacturing towns of the Midlands. The 5th Duke of Bridgewater, who lived in nearby Ashridge, initiated the development of canals in the Midlands which then led on to the building of this canal. (1996)

The town lies in a river valley on the Roman Akeman Street and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. It has the remains of a castle, a school founded in 1544 that Graham Greene attended and a canal. Captions include the year the photograph was taken.
