In 2006 The Campaign to Protect Rural England published a rank order of 87 English counties and unitary authorities showing their ‘tranquility’ ratings. The Chiltern counties didn’t feature very high on the list: Oxfordshire 23, Bedfordshire 31, Buckinghamshire 41 and Hertfordshire (the most densely populated county in the UK) 53.

Despite this I know from our photographic forays that you can still find tranquil spots in the Chilterns. So I asked PhotoGroup committeeman Michael Bowker to select some pictures from our website that reminded him of places that are, to quote the CPRE, “…largely natural and free from intrusive man-made noise and structures, tranquil areas in the countryside that allow us to escape the noise and stress of cities, towns and suburbs, to be inspired and to get refreshed.” Enjoy them.
